Compatibility is usually the real constraint. Pick the machine you want to power and see which fuels are plausible, which need modification, and which are not a fit.

High blends can affect warranty, cold-weather starting and after-treatment systems.
What compatibility actually depends on
Engine type
Spark ignition and compression ignition accept fundamentally different fuels. This is the first question, not a detail.
Fuel system materials
Seals, hoses, gaskets and pump components are specified for a particular fuel. Alcohols and high biodiesel blends can degrade the wrong ones.
Engine management
Modern electronic control expects a narrow fuel specification. Older mechanical systems are more tolerant but less efficient.
Emissions equipment
Catalysts and particulate filters are calibrated for specific fuels; changing fuel can damage them or breach regulations.
Manufacturer approval
Published blend limits and warranty terms decide what is sensible on a vehicle you rely on.
Local law
Road use, fuel tax, emissions testing and inspection rules vary widely. Legal on a farm is not legal on a highway.
