Overview
Ethanol is an alcohol fuel produced by fermenting sugars and then purifying the result. It is the most widely produced liquid biofuel in the world and is already blended into most gasoline.
Producing fuel ethanol is conceptually simple and practically demanding: fermentation is easy, purification is not, and distillation is one of the most heavily regulated activities covered on this site.
Key consideration
Fuel-grade ethanol must be dehydrated. Water contamination causes phase separation in blended fuel.

Efficiency
The energy cost of distillation is the dominant factor. Ethanol also carries roughly two-thirds the energy per litre of gasoline, so fuel economy falls on high blends even when the engine runs well.
